How the date is set

Why Sukkot moves in the civil calendar, and what falls when

It begins five days after Yom Kippur, on the 15th of Tishrei, the full moon of that month. The Hebrew calendar counts by the moon and adds a leap month seven times in nineteen years to stay in step with the seasons, so the festival can begin anywhere from mid-September to late October.

Its seven days are followed at once by Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The first day is Yom Tov everywhere; outside Israel the second is as well. The days between are Chol Hamoed, when the sukkah and lulav continue and travel is allowed. The seventh day is Hoshana Rabbah. Shemini Atzeret is a festival in its own right, and outside Israel Simchat Torah follows it the next day; in Israel the two are one.

Both years begin on a Friday evening, so the first day is Shabbat and the lulav and etrog are first taken on the second day.
