Italian Alps
The Italian Alps run from Mont Blanc in the west to the Dolomites in the east, and kosher food in the mountains takes planning. Our program here is a winter week at a fully kosher hotel in Canazei, with the meals and the Shabbat taken care of.
Our Italian Alps program
Our Italian Alps program is a hotel stay in the Dolomites, in the village of Canazei, with the whole week kosher.
Stays are private, booked for your own dates in the winter season, and priced on request. The page carries the hotel, the meals, the ski week and the terms.
The region
The Italian side of the Alps is a long arc of mountains, running from Piedmont and the Aosta Valley in the west, through Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, to Veneto and Friuli in the east. It is a region of several mountain cultures, not one.
The Aosta Valley is the far northwest corner of Italy, French as well as Italian in its history and its place names. Courmayeur lies at the foot of Mont Blanc, at 4,806 meters the highest peak in the Alps, and the city of Aosta sits at the center of the valley.

South Tyrol, in the northeast, is a mountain province where German is spoken as widely as Italian, with its own Alpine villages, meadows and lakes. Lago di Braies and the high meadows of Seiser Alm are two of its best-known places, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stand on its eastern edge.
Trentino lies just south of it, a province of valleys and lakes. Its eastern valley, the Val di Fassa, is where our week is based, in the mountains known as the Dolomites. Kosher Dolomites: Canazei, Val di Fassa and the Mountains describes that part of the range in detail.

Winter
Winter is the Alps at their most dramatic: snow on the rock walls, lifts running from the valleys, and short, bright days.
The ski season in the Dolomites runs from December to March, and it is the season our week is built around. You ski, or walk, or skate by day; in the evening you come back to a kosher dinner and, on Shabbat, a full Shabbat program.

Summer
Summer is the other Alpine season: green meadows, clear lakes, and walking from the valley floor to the high pastures.
Hiking is the heart of an Alpine summer. Many of the lifts that carry skiers in winter also carry walkers in summer, and the paths around Lago di Braies, across the Seiser Alm meadows and below the Tre Cime are among the best known in the Dolomites. The summer light is long, which suits a family that wants a day outdoors and a calm evening.
Our program in the Italian Alps is the winter ski stay in Canazei. The hotel takes private stays all year, winter and summer, so a summer week in the mountains can be arranged: tell us your dates when you inquire.

Kashrut
An Alpine village is built around local food, and kosher is something you arrange in advance, not something you find on arrival.
The mountain huts, the lift-top restaurants and the village inns serve what the region cooks, so a kosher traveler who goes alone plans every meal, packed lunches included, and plans Shabbat around the nearest place to stay put. That is the reason for a hotel that is kosher from the kitchen out.
On our week the meals are Glatt Kosher Mehadrin, with a breakfast buffet you can make up a packed lunch from, dinner each evening and full Shabbat meals. The supervising rav and Chalav Yisrael are to be confirmed. Tell us about any allergy or dietary need when you inquire.

Where we stay
A fully kosher 4-star hotel, the My One Hotel, in Canazei, in the Val di Fassa, with a synagogue in the hotel and a complete Shabbat program.
The week suits a family, a couple or a group of friends, and skiers and non-skiers alike: the valley has ice skating, snow walks, sledding and the spa for days off the slopes.
