Seven nights through the fjords, from Rotterdam to Amsterdam

Hidden Gems of the Fjords is our kosher fjords cruise at the end of August: seven nights aboard Holland America's Rotterdam, from Rotterdam on Sunday, August 29, 2027 to Amsterdam on Sunday, September 5. The ship calls at Ålesund and Nordfjordeid, cruises the Nordfjord and the Hardangerfjord, and calls at Odda and Bergen. It is a Norway fjord cruise with a kosher kitchen for our own group: Glatt Kosher Mehadrin meals, a minyan every day, and Shabbat kept together at sea.

A kosher kitchen for the group, on a Holland America ship

The ship is Holland America's, with its own guests on board; our group eats apart from them. Every meal is Glatt Kosher Mehadrin, freshly prepared for the group alone by an executive kosher chef, under mashgichim who are responsible for the kosher kitchen, and served in a dining area that is ours.

Everything is Chalav Yisrael, Pat Yisrael and Bishul Yisrael. There is a lunch every day, on board or packed to take ashore, and the long day in Ålesund ends with dinner back on board.

Who it suits

Who the cruise suits, and what the ports ask of you

Seven nights is a short cruise: you unpack once, and the ship carries you between the fjords while you sleep. The fjords themselves are seen from the deck, so the scenery does not depend on how far you walk.

  • Our guests are mostly English speakers from the USA, Europe and Israel
  • The cruise starts in Rotterdam and ends in Amsterdam, so book your flights open-jaw
  • Late August and early September are the end of the northern summer
  • The reservation form asks for a short health declaration

Questions

Asked before booking Hidden Gems of the Fjords

When is the Hidden Gems of the Fjords cruise?

Sunday, August 29 to Sunday, September 5, 2027: seven nights aboard Holland America's Rotterdam, from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. The same ship sails to the fjords with our group twice in July: Kosher Fjords and Glaciers Cruise to Norway, July 2027 and Kosher Norway Fjords Cruise: Hardangerfjord to Storfjorden, July 2027.

Where does the cruise start and finish?

You board in Rotterdam on August 29; the ship sails at 3:00 pm. It arrives in Amsterdam at 7:00 am on September 5, where you leave the ship. You book your own flights, into Rotterdam and home from Amsterdam.

Which fjords and ports does the cruise visit?

Scenic cruising on the Nordfjord and the Hardangerfjord, and four ports: Ålesund, Nordfjordeid, Odda and Bergen, with a day at sea going out and Shabbat at sea coming back.

Does the cruise go to Oslo or the Sognefjord?

No. The 2027 sailing does not call at Oslo or cruise the Sognefjord: it goes to Ålesund, Nordfjordeid, Odda and Bergen, and cruises the Nordfjord and the Hardangerfjord.

Is every meal kosher on the ship?

Yes. Every meal for the group is Glatt Kosher Mehadrin, Chalav Yisrael, Pat Yisrael and Bishul Yisrael, freshly prepared for the group by an executive kosher chef under mashgichim, and served in a dining area of our own. There is lunch every day, on board or packed to take ashore.

How is Shabbat kept on the cruise?

With the group, on board. A Sefer Torah sails with us and there is a minyan every day. Shabbat, September 4, is a day at sea after Bergen, so no one has to be ashore.

Are shore excursions included?

No. Shore excursions are optional in every port and booked separately. Ask us which ones suit a day in port.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend insurance covering cancellation, medical care and luggage, bought as soon as you book so the cover is complete.
