Eight days in Montenegro, with a day in Dubrovnik

Our kosher tour of Montenegro is eight days with the group: the Adriatic coast at Budva, the Bay of Kotor and Perast, Skadar Lake, a day across the border in Dubrovnik, Shabbat with the Jewish community of Podgorica, and the mountains and lakes of Durmitor National Park. Every meal is kosher, a minyan is arranged every day, and the touring, the coach and the hotels are arranged for you.

8 days, 7 nights: Arrive at Tivat or Podgorica airport on the first day, fly home from either on the eighth. The next departure is Monday, September 6 to Monday, September 13, 2027.
Two hotels: Four nights on the coast in Budva, then three in Podgorica, the capital, for Shabbat and the drive north.
Meals: Glatt Kosher Mehadrin. A breakfast buffet, a packed lunch on touring days, and dinner with kosher catering each evening.

Kashrut

Kosher in Montenegro, at every meal

Every meal on the tour is Glatt Kosher Mehadrin, with the kashrut and catering under the supervision of Chabad of Budva and Chabad of Podgorica. Breakfast is a buffet, lunch on touring days is a packed lunch you make up yourself, and dinner is served each evening at restaurants or hotels with kosher catering.

A minyan is arranged every day. On Shabbat you pray and eat with the community in Podgorica. Tell us about any allergy or dietary need when you inquire.

Four nights in Budva, three in Podgorica

Budva, nights 1 to 4: The Harmonia Hotel by Dukley, on the coast at Budva. The Bay of Kotor, Skadar Lake and Dubrovnik are day trips from here.
Podgorica, nights 5 to 7: The Boscovich Boutique Hotel in Podgorica, the capital, for Shabbat with the community and the day in Durmitor.

Day 1 · MondayArrival in Montenegro. A private transfer from Tivat or Podgorica airport to Budva, a coastal town of Venetian walls and cobbled lanes. Time to rest after the flight, and for anyone who wants it, an evening walk through Budva Old Town.Overnight: Budva
Day 2 · TuesdayThe Bay of Kotor. A full day on Boka Bay, often called the southernmost fjord in Europe. Kotor Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Jewish cemetery of Kotor, a quiet reminder of the Jewish presence in the city over the centuries. Then Perast, a baroque town of sea captains' houses, a short boat ride to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, and the Kotor cable car to 1,360 meters above the bay.Overnight: Budva

Day 3 · WednesdaySkadar Lake. A photo stop above Sveti Stefan, the island fishing village joined to the shore. Then Virpazar, a lakeside village of stone bridges and fishing boats, and a boat cruise on Skadar Lake among water lilies, cormorants and herons.Overnight: Budva
Day 4 · ThursdayDubrovnik, Croatia. An early start for the border and Dubrovnik. A walk through the Old Town inside its stone walls and around the old harbor, then the Dubrovnik Synagogue, one of the oldest Sephardic synagogues still in use, dating from the 15th century, and the Jewish museum beside it. Day 5 · FridayCetinje and Lipa Cave. Inland to Cetinje, the old royal capital, and the Museum of King Nikola in the former palace. A short train ride through the forest into Lipa Cave, one of the largest cave systems in the country. Arrival in Podgorica by 15:00 to check in and prepare for Shabbat, then Kabbalat Shabbat at the community center and Shabbat dinner.Overnight: Podgorica

Day 7 · SundayDurmitor National Park. North to Nikšić and the Operation Velvet memorial at the Kapino Polje airfield. In 1948 the new Israeli Air Force flew Spitfires bought in Czechoslovakia to Israel by way of this airfield, with Yugoslavia's agreement; the memorial, a Spitfire on a tall pedestal, was unveiled in July 2024. On to Žabljak, more than 1,400 meters above sea level and the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your tour manager

A tour manager who knows the Balkans

The tour manager travels with the group from the first evening in Budva to the last morning in Podgorica, with specialist local guides in each place. Our tour manager for Montenegro is Rabbi Mitchell Ackerson, a YU graduate who has led tour groups in more than 20 countries. After a career in the pulpit and as a US Army and hospital chaplain, he made Aliyah to guide tours.

On Friday and Shabbat the group is joined by the community itself: Kabbalat Shabbat, tefilla and meals at the community center in Podgorica.

The pace

Who the tour suits, and how much walking there is

This is a touring week in a small group of at most 25 guests. The days are full but not hard: walks through old towns on stone streets, two short boat trips, a cable car, a short train into a cave, and light walks in the mountains. It suits travelers who are happy to be on their feet for much of the day and to keep to a group timetable.

What the Montenegro tour costs

The September 2027 tour is $3,900 per person, sharing a double room, in US dollars.

The price covers the seven nights in the hotels, the kosher meals, the tour manager and local guides, the coach, every activity on the itinerary and the Shabbat program. Flights to Montenegro and travel insurance are extra, as is anything you buy along the way.

Is there kosher food in Montenegro?

Yes. On the tour every meal is Glatt Kosher Mehadrin, with the kashrut and catering under the supervision of Chabad of Budva and Chabad of Podgorica: a breakfast buffet, a packed lunch on touring days, and dinner with kosher catering each evening.

How is Shabbat kept on the tour?

Shabbat is spent in Podgorica with the Jewish community. The group arrives by 15:00 on Friday, with Kabbalat Shabbat at the community center and Shabbat dinner, then tefilla and lunch on Shabbat and a quiet afternoon. A minyan is arranged every day of the tour.

Does the tour include Dubrovnik?

Yes, a full day. You cross the border into Croatia, walk the Old Town inside its walls and visit the Dubrovnik Synagogue and the Jewish museum beside it, then return to Budva for the night. Bring your passport that day.

What Jewish heritage is there in Montenegro and Dubrovnik?

On the tour you visit the Jewish cemetery of Kotor, the Dubrovnik Synagogue, one of the oldest Sephardic synagogues still in use, and the Jewish museum beside it, and you spend Shabbat with the Jewish community of Podgorica.

Are flights included?

No. You book your own flights to Tivat or Podgorica. Send us your flight times and we arrange your transfer to the hotel in Budva, and on the last day back to either airport.

How big is the group?

Small. The group is limited to 25 guests, and places are confirmed in order of booking.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend insurance covering cancellation, medical care and luggage, bought soon after you pay your deposit so the cover is complete.
