Kosher Dolomites: Canazei, Val di Fassa and the Mountains

The Dolomites are a range of pale rock towers in northern Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our winter week is in the Val di Fassa, in the village of Canazei, at a fully kosher hotel with the meals and the Shabbat taken care of.

Our Dolomites program

Stays are private, booked for your own dates in the winter season, and priced on request. The page carries the hotel, the meals, the ski week and the terms.

The mountains

The Dolomites: pale rock, a UNESCO site and the Sella group

The Dolomites were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. They stand across Trentino, South Tyrol and Veneto, and what sets them apart from the rest of the Alps is the rock: pale limestone, in sheer walls and towers, which turns pink and orange at sunrise and sunset.

Three names come up in the Val di Fassa. The Sella group is a great flat-topped massif of rock walls with the valley around it; Sassolungo is a crown of rock towers to the west; and the Marmolada, at 3,343 meters the highest peak in the Dolomites, carries the range's largest glacier.

The village

Canazei kosher: the village, and the Val di Fassa around it

Canazei sits at the head of the Val di Fassa, a Ladin valley in Trentino, beneath the Sella group and the Marmolada. It is a village of wooden-balconied hotels along one main street, with the lifts a few minutes away.

You stay in the village, so the evenings are yours: a walk down the main street, the spa, or a quiet night in after a day on the mountain. The nearest big cities are Verona and Venice, each about two hours away by road.

Lifts, pistes and ski school in the Val di Fassa

The Dolomites have more than 1,200 kilometers of ski slopes, and the Val di Fassa is one of the valleys that connects to them.

Above Canazei the Belvedere area climbs through pine forest toward the peaks. Col Rodella, below Sassolungo, is reached from Campitello, the next village down the valley, by gondola. Both are within a short ride of the village. There is no set timetable on our week: ski as much or as little as you like, and come back to the hotel for tea and dinner.

Beginners and children: ask us about ski school and lessons when you inquire. Ask us about ski passes and equipment hire too.

Summer

Summer walking in the Dolomites: Lake Carezza and the high paths

In summer the same valley is green, the lifts carry walkers, and the walking paths run from the lakes to the high meadows.

Lake Carezza, a short drive from the Val di Fassa, is known for its green water and its view of the Latemar rock towers. The Val di Fassa has its own lakes and villages to walk, such as Pera di Fassa and the Avisio River. Our Dolomites program is the winter week; if you want a summer stay in these mountains, tell us when you inquire.
