Jewish heritage tours for travelers who want to stand where Jewish life happened: the synagogues of Tomar, Marrakech and Cochin, the ShUM cities on the Rhine, Vilnius and Kraków, with every meal Glatt Kosher Mehadrin and Shabbat kept with the local community.

The next departures

Eight kosher heritage tours and cruises, in date order

Each one is led through the Jewish history of the place: the old synagogues and cemeteries, the communities that are still there, and a Shabbat with one of them. You fly in, we meet you, and the touring, the hotels and the meals are arranged for you. More than 900 guests on our tours and cruises since 2022.

Dates and from-prices are the ones published today, per person sharing a double room or cabin, in US dollars. Each page carries the full itinerary, the hotels, the price and the deposit terms. Looking for the whole range, from Japan to a Kruger safari? See all our kosher tours, or the kosher cruises.

What it is

What is a Jewish heritage tour?

A Jewish heritage tour is a trip built around the Jewish history of a place: its synagogues, cemeteries and old Jewish quarters, and the communities that are still there.

On ours you walk the sites with a guide who knows them, keep Shabbat with a local community where there is one, and eat only kosher food, every meal arranged. The tours differ in pace and in distance: the Rhine cruise is the gentlest, with one cabin for the week, and a land tour such as Morocco moves between cities. Each page says which it is.

Europe

Shabbat is kept in Porto with the local kehillah at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, and a tour leader travels with the group for the whole trip.

Kashrut

Kosher on the road, at every meal

Every meal on every tour and cruise is Glatt Kosher Mehadrin. How it reaches the table depends on the country, and each page says exactly how.

In Portugal the group is on full board, with packed lunches on touring days. In Lithuania and Poland a cook and mashgiach travel with the group where there is no kosher restaurant nearby. On the Rhine and the Baltic the meals are cooked on board for the group. In Morocco, where a hotel or restaurant cannot meet our standard, our own mashgiach and cook travel with the group. In Havana the meals are at Chateau Blanc under International Kosher Mehadrin supervision, and in India the group eats at the Chabad restaurants in Delhi, Pushkar and Mumbai.

The pace

For travelers with time: kosher tours for seniors and unhurried walkers

Heritage touring means old quarters, synagogues and cemeteries, and old streets are rarely flat. The tours differ in how much they ask of you, so the pace is stated on each page, and Shabbat is always a rest day.

  • On the Rhine you unpack once and the ship moves between towns while you sleep. The town visits are walking tours over old streets and some steps, and Shabbat is a full day in port with no touring beyond a walk.
  • In Havana the pace is easy to moderate: Old Havana is walked at a relaxed pace with stops at plazas and synagogues, and the Viñales day is the most active.
  • In Portugal, Sintra and Alfama mean cobblestones, steps and slopes, and the touring is full most days. In Morocco the medinas and kasbahs mean steps, ramps and uneven ground.
  • Traveling on your own, or with a friend? The tours suit couples, friends and solo travelers, and a room of your own carries a single supplement where the tour page gives one.
  • Tell us what you can manage before you book. The reservation form asks for a short health declaration, because some tours are more active than others.

Price and booking

How booking works

Prices are per person, sharing a double room or cabin, in US dollars, and each page gives its own: $5,500 for India, $4,990 for the Baltic cruise, $5,500 for Portugal and $5,900 for Morocco. The price of the next Rhine sailing is to be announced; the Lithuania and Poland and Havana tours are not currently scheduled.

A reservation form and a deposit confirm your place; the amount and the balance date are on each tour's page. Nothing is paid on this website.

  1. You send a short inquiry

Six fields, with the tour you were reading already filled in.

  2. A person replies, not a system

The person for your region calls or emails you, within one working day, with the itinerary and the reservation form.

  3. Every question answered, with patience

Kashrut, rooms, walking, flights, deposit and balance. Ask as many as you like.

  4. Places are confirmed in order of booking

Each group has a fixed number of places. Your form and deposit confirm yours.

How is Shabbat kept on a heritage tour?

Shabbat is a rest day. In Porto it is with the local kehillah at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue; in Marrakech at the Lazama Synagogue; in Vilnius; in Cochin at the Paradesi Synagogue. On the Rhine the ship is in port at Speyer, and the group keeps Shabbat together on board.

Are these tours suitable for seniors?

Yes, if you choose the pace that suits you. The pace is stated on each page, and the Rhine is the gentlest: you unpack once and the ship moves while you sleep. Portugal and Morocco ask more of your legs, with cobblestones, steps and uneven ground. Tell us what you can manage and we will say which tour suits you.

Do I need to be religious to come?

Our guests keep Shabbat and kosher, but there are no specific religious requirements to join, and we do not ask about your personal practice.

Are flights included?

No. You book your own flights. We meet you at the airport on arrival and take you back on the last day, so send us your flight times.

Is there a Jewish heritage tour of Spain?

Our guide to Jewish history in Spain is Jewish history on the rich Jewish Spain tour. The neighboring Sephardic story, Portugal, has a tour of its own: Kosher Portugal: Lisbon, Porto and Jewish Portugal.

Do you run a Jewish heritage tour in Israel?

Our Israel programs are described on our Israel page. The Jewish heritage tours listed here are outside Israel.
