Activities

Kosher Travelers Ultimate Scotch Tour of Scotland is suitable for couples, families, and groups looking to experience Scotland from a local’s point of view. The country that is situated north of England and forms about a third of the landmass of the United Kingdom, offers a very wide variety of scenery, history and culture. With over 800 islands, mainly off the west coast, and almost as many historic castles to explore, there is not sufficient time to take in all that this gem of a country has to offer. Experience breathtaking views, Scottish culture, some of the finest Scottish whiskies, and enjoy the experience of a lifetime with our unique tours.

Howard Ross, was born and grew up in Glasgow, surrounded by the traditional smells of the ‘wee dram’. He has lived in Israel since 1981. Following a career as a senior Government economist, he began taking groups of friends back to his native Scotland, sharing unique tales of growing up in a small community within a country steeped with historical, cultural and traditional aspects, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery and endowed with many local whisky distilleries.

Enhanced with many anecdotal experiences, and accompanied by traditional Scottish poems and songs, The Ultimate Scottish Whisky tours are an authentic guiding experience for the kosher-keeping Scotch-drinking traveler.

Perthshire Group, June 14 - 18, 2020

Tour Manager: Howard Ross

Sunday 14 June

Meet up at Glasgow Airport, Scotland at 15:00 p.m.

Set off for Stirling Castle where we will have a chance to appreciate one of the most historically significant castles where several Scottish kings and queens were crowned including Mary Queen of Scots. The castle grounds include buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries as well as more “modern” additions from the 18th century.

Our journey will take us close to the Wallace monument and the Stirling bridge commemorating Scots hero Sir William Wallace who fought against the English with much success until eventually paying the ultimate price when captured by the English in the early 14th century.

Following Stirling, we will head North easterly direction towards the ancient town of Perth and continue on to the serene forest countryside villages that comprise the area where our special historic manor sits.

Monday 15 June

Following breakfast, we will set off for our first distillery – the Dewar’s World of Whisky. En-route we will take in the Tay Forest Park while the road effectively follows the flow of the river Tay back upstream towards the town of Aberfeldy.

First founded in the late 19th century, Dewar’s is renowned for its smooth blended whisky, and was among the very first distilleries to develop overseas markets and export whisky legally. The distillery, now referred to as the Dewar’s-Aberfeldy distillery, is set among the highest mountains of Perthshire, at a point where they meet the deepest lochs in the region.  “The Aberfeldy” is a single malt mainly used and sold to the blending market, including Dewar’s, in addition to its signature 12-year-old malt.

Following a picnic lunch we will leave for a short trip up towards the famous Queen’s View via Tummel bridge where we will take a walk and enjoy some more breath-taking scenery.

We continue on to a full tour of Blair Castle – a castle steeped in history from Mary Queen of Scots to Queen Victoria, the tales of Dukes and Earls and the fates of clans have all been touched and affected by this extraordinary structure. The castle has been used as a site for filming many tv productions including “Victoria” in 2017.

Tuesday 16 June

Following breakfast we will make our way to the village of Killin via the Edradour distillery. This boutique distillery has the distinction of being the smallest in Scotland and comes highly recommended – punching well above its weight.

We will visit the Falls of Dochart, taking a short walk around the village watching the falls as they flow towards Scotland’s longest river - the Tay.

The afternoon will be devoted to your own choice of SPORTS ACTIVITIES – A possible selection of various sporting activities can be arranged such as cycling, fishing, shooting, golf or hiking.

We will meet up and return together to our special abode.

Following dinner, and before retiring, an optional outing to hear some local live music, or a games competition within the manor including the billiard room, could be arranged

Wednesday 17 June

We travel northwest towards the old military road to Dalwhinnie. Set at the highest altitude, this classic malt distillery is situated on the southern edge of

Inverness-shire. Offering some interesting new range products, we will tour and taste our way through the highlights of this iconic distillery.

On our way south we will travel via the braes of Foss skirting the famous Munroe Schiehallion before arriving at the renowned Menzies castle.

Here we will tour the ancient edifice and, weather allowing, also stroll through the famous Walled garden.

On the way back we will travel to Dunkeld, and offer the possibility of walking the famous Hermitage Woodland walk, for those keen on a good wee hike (weather dependent).

Following a final dinner together, a special prize-carrying whisky-tasting competition will take place – guaranteed to bring a smile, (and much more!) to your lips.

Thursday 18 June

Following our last breakfast and check out, we will head south via the quaint town of Perth towards Edinburgh. On our way to Auld Reekie we will take in more of the East Lothian coastline and enjoy the view of the famous Forth Road Bridge.

Once in Edinburgh, we will take in some of the many prominent features of the Scottish capital, which have catapulted it to the much-coveted status of “the best city to live in, in the world” (Arcadis, Global Consultancy, December 2018).

There is much to be related and plenty to see in this wonderful city. Among other places of interest, we will tour the renowned Princes Street, The Walter Scott monument, the Scottish Parliament building, have a glimpse of Arthur’s seat, take a peak at Holyrood House, and of course, leave time for the famous “Royal Mile”.

The city, which is steeped in history and boasts tremendous cultural activities – not least the world-famous Edinburgh Festival and its fringe activities – also produced many famous personalities, such as the author Robert Louis

Stevenson, poet Sir Walter Scott, inventor Alexander Graham Bell, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and actor Sean Connery. We will discover some of the very paths along which they walked. There will be free time for souvenir purchasing as well as general browsing and photo-ops with the many kilt-attired bagpipe-playing locals. A healthy stroll up the Royal Mile towards the plaza of Edinburgh castle, is recommended.

We will set off for Edinburgh airport at 14:30 p.m., in order to allow for homeward or onward flights.

Deposit and payment cancellation policy: In order to secure your booking a non-returnable deposit of $500 is required. The balance of payment must be paid by March 9th, 2020. Following this date, any cancellation would not be refundable.

Insurance: It is highly recommended to take out appropriate travel, medical and cancellation insurance.

This promises to be an absorbing, enjoyable and highly attractive tour, taking in some fabulous highland scenery.

What our guests have to say...

Hi David & Chana

I wanted to thank you once again for allowing my sons and I to join you on the Kosher Whisky Tour to Scotland. I have to commend you both for not only laying out an itinerary that was fun, educational and religiously acceptable, but for being flexible and attuned to your guests wishes as well. You saw to it that we were well fed, comfortable, and well lubricated throughout five wonderful days of touring and drinking.

Your choice of tour guide, hotel, leisure coach and caterer show your tour organizing genius and experience as exhibited in the success of this itinerary in its inaugural undertaking.

We look forward to joining you on other tours in the future and wish you continued success as you go m'chayil l'chayil."

Sam Rosenblum and Sons, Beit Shemesh

Howard’s knowledge of whiskies, the culture, geography as well as songs of Scotland, together with his wicked sense of humour and seamless organisation, gave us an amazing trip with never a dull moment. Highly recommended!

–Chez The Aussie, Caesarea

I went on one of Howard’s whisky tours and can strongly recommend the experience. The whole trip was professionally organized, each day planned to gain maximum effect. Howard would also give us general information on the places visited all spiced with humour, songs and stories. It brings a smile to my face each time I recall the trip.

– Danny Koor, Efrat

I would like to thank you for organizing an unforgettable holiday. I had no idea that it would be such an incredible experience.

Everything was planned exactly right so that the days were packed full of fun and interesting activities. Visiting nine distilleries in 5 days, together with a beautiful lochside ramble, and sports activities in addition, made for a fantastic time. Your guiding was inspired – witty and informative and trying to teach us Scottish songs was hilarious.

Thank you so much, you certainly gave us our monies worth, and taught us to appreciate Scotland and Scotch!

P.S. I can’t wait for the next trip!

–Reuven Cohen, Efrat

Howard’s Islay tour will rank among my best memories and trips. Picture postcard scenery throughout, charming small villages, good mix of distillery and non-distillery-related activities, a dream trip for whisky lovers, especially those who prefer the smokier ones of Islay. Good value for the money and well organized. Saw a lot yet never felt exhausted or overloaded. Long enough to stand alone as a short exotic getaway, short enough to fit into a longer trip if you want to explore Scotland further.

Howard’s passion and knowledge gave the tour a unique personal flavor, peppering the travel between sights with song, history, stories and humor.

– Cliff Wachtel, Jerusalem

My son and I went on a trip with Howard to the isle of Islay. We had a fantastic time. We admired his knowledge, wit and guiding. The overall organization was great, the accommodation amazingly special and comfortable too.
We hope to go again to tour other regions.
– Sammy Katz, Givat Ze’ev

If you are looking for a kosher tour of Scotland, look no further than Howard Ross. He put together an amazing tour: good kosher food, the best distilleries, fascinating sites and truly beautiful scenery… what more could you ask for?!
– Ken Spiro, Jerusalem

Dear Howard

Just to say the whole trip was organized in a highly professional, detailed manner. The itinerary was perfect and flexible, the food and accommodation were excellent and good value for money, and the atmosphere all the time was extremely pleasant.

You also added some traditional Scottish content in the form of language, folk songs, stories and general knowledge which added enormously to the overall experience.

I would gladly join you for another romp through the highlands.

– Jeremy Berkowitz, Jerusalem

Accommodations

Our tours are generally based out of one central location with high-quality, comfortable accommodations. We choose castles, manors, or estates that are unique, have a history, and are central to the region and the attractions of each tour.

Shared bathrooms are common in Scotland. For your comfort, our kosher tour groups always aim to stay in places with en-suite bathrooms or the most comfortable accommodation possible. They are also selected with our self-catering needs in mind.

Kashrut in Scotland

Eating Kosher in Scotland is not as straightforward as in the U.S. or Israel. The main meal in the evening is based on food prepared by one of two local Kosher caterers under strict Hashgacha of either the local Chabad emissaries, Rabbi Chaim and Sorro Jacobs or of the West of Scotland Kashrut Authority, supervised by Rabbi Moshe Rubin.  Our additional purchased food is either certified by the London Beis Din or by an accepted Kashrut list or authority. The standard for the breakfast is not Cholov Yisroel, but if this is specifically requested, can be arranged.

Travelers with specific dietary requests such as gluten free or vegetarian etc should give advance notice, in order to accommodate suitable cuisine.

Group Size: This tour is designed to accommodate up to 18 people. The tour will be conducted in English – with a wee bit of Scottish thrown in here and there.
